Since we've moved in to our new Nature Learning Center on Bald Hill in Albany, it's been nice to check out what birds spend time here on a day-to-day basis.
In September we had some nice mixed flocks passing through on their way south, including: Black-throated Green Warblers, Pine Warblers, a Black-and-white Warbler, a Magnolia Warbler, a Chestnut-sided Warbler, an Ovenbird, Blue-headed Vireos, a Red-eyed Vireo, and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Other birds that were seen during September include: Eastern Phoebe, Eastern Wood-Pewee, American Crow, Common Raven, Blue Jays, White-breasted Nuthatches, Black-capped Chickadees, Downy Woodpecker, and Mourning Doves.
In October, in addition to our common visitors of Blue Jay, Downy Woodpecker, Chickadee, Crow, Raven, Mourning Dove, and White-breasted Nuthatch we had: a Winter Wren, Dark-eyed Juncos, Evening Grosbeaks, American Robins, Ruffed Grouse, Brown Creeper, Red-breasted Nuthatches, Golden-crowned Kinglets, White-throated Sparrows, and American Goldfinchs. Some were probably just passing through, and some will be spending the winter here. Here at the end of October, we've been visited by a Hooded Merganser on Chase Pond.
And today, the first day of November, we had a Red-tailed Hawk catching thermals and calling as it circled above the center. What a beautiful fall day it was too! It got so warm today that we even found a Spring Peeper and an American Toad moving about the forest!
Till next time... keep observing,
